AYURVEDIC REMEDIES FOR ECZEMA

Eczema means a "boiling over" of the skin and is characterised by spontaneous eruptions. It is also characterised clinically by papulo-vesiculated eruptions. In Ayurveda it is called vicharchika. It is primarily of two types, the dry and the wet. In the former, there is no exudation whereas in the latter type water may come out of the patches, either by scratching or without it.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Eczema: The eczema affected patch should be cleaned daily with warm water boiled with the bark of the neem tree. After cleaning, the paste of the bark of the neem tree should be applied over it and allowed to dry. Paradadi malham is very commonly used by Ayurvedic physicians for the treatment of this condition.

It contains, among others, mercury and sulphur and it should be applied three times daily. For internal administration, Shuddha gandhaka should be given to the patient in a dose of 0.200 gm, twice a day, mixed with honey, on empty stomach. In chronic and obstinate cases, Rasa manikya can also be given. It is an arsenic preparation and should be given with proper care. Normally, it is given in a dose of 0.125 gm., twice a day, mixed with honey. It is available in a scale form and in small pieces. This should be administered after making it into a fine powder.

In case of eczema of infants, both Paradadi malham and Rasa manikya should not be used. They are poisonous and may cause other complicaČtions. For external application, Guduchyadi taila or Brihat marichyadi taila should be used.

The patient should not be constipated and if so, he should be given one teaspoonful of triphala powder at bedtime regularly.

Diet to taken by Eczema patients: Salt intake should be reduced. It is necessary specially if the patient is given Rasa manikya internally. Sour things including pickles and curd are strictly prohibited. Bitter things like bitter gourd, bitter variety of drumstick and neem flowers are very useful for these patients. Turmeric is exceedingly useful for the patients having this disease. It can be applied externally over the eczematous patch and it can be taken internally along with milk in a dose of one teaspoonful, twice a day.

Other regimens: Certain types of garments interfere with the evaporation of the sweat. Nylons, terylenes and other synthetic fibres should, therefore, be avoided. The eczema patient should use as little cloth as possible. The eczematous patches particularly should be kept free from any tight clothing.
