AYURVEDIC REMEDIES FOR FLATULENCE

Distention of the stomach and intestines due to wind is called flatulence. Normally wind is formed during the process of digestion, but is passed out in the form of flatus. If not, or if formed in excess, this leads to distension of the intestine and stomach. In Ayurveda this conditions is called adhmana.

Due to distension, the patient experiences discomfort, loss of appetite, indigestion, breathlessness, headache and sleeplessness. It is usually associated with constipation.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Flatulence: If constipation is the cause Hing triguna taila should be given to the patient in a dose of two teaspoonfuls once a day on an empty stomach with a cup of hot water. Kumari asava in a dose of 30 ml. twice daily after food with an equally quantity of water is an ideal medicine.

Hingvashtaka churna should be given to the patient in a dose of one teaspoonful twice daily mixed with one teaspoonful of ghee and followed by hot water.

Diet to taken by Flatulence patients: Fried things and pulses as well as beans of all types should be avoided. Milk would not be easily digestible to the patient. Curd and butter-milk would be useful.

Other regimens: Any hard labour immediately after taking food is prohibited. The Flatulence patient should take some rest after food. He should avoid worry and anxiety especially while taking food.
