Lord Vishnu is considered to be the God of the world. The mythology talks about two faces of Lord Vishnu. On one hand, he is shown as quiet, pleasant and gentle. But his second face is dangerous where he is shown in a comfortable posture on Kalswarup Sheshnag (king of snakes). He is the Preserver or Sustainer of life with his steadfast
principles of order, righteousness and truth. When these values are
under threat, he emerges out of his transcendence to restore peace
and order on earth.
It is written in the scriptures about Lord Vishnu that -
Ten Avatars -
Matsyavatara (fish) - in this form Vishnu saved the Saint Vaivaswata,
Koorma (tortoise)- at the Churning of the Ocean, Vishnu as Koorma (or Kurma) offered his back as a pivot on which to rest the Mount Mandara, used as a churning stick by gods and demons. ,
Varaaha (boar) -he killed the demon Hiranyaksha, recovered the stolen Veda's and released the Earth from the bottom of the ocean.
Narasimha (the man lion) - as a creature who was half-lion and half-man, Vishnu killed the demon
Hiranyashasipu, brother of Niranyaksha, who had gained the boon of
immunity from attacks by man, beast or god.,
Vaamana (the dwarf) - he killed the demon Bali, who had gained dominion over the Earth and had chased the gods from the heavens.,
Parasurama (the angry man) - he killed the King Kartavirya, who had stolen the holy cow Kamadhenu, which could grant all desires.,
Lord Rama (the perfect human of the Ramayana)- he killed the demon King Ravana, who had abducted Sita.,
Lord Krishna (the divine diplomat and statesman) -he killed Kansa, son of a demon and the tyrannical King of Mathura,
Lord Bhuddha -Vishnu incarnated to remove suffering from the world.
and the yet to appear 10th incarnation called the Kalki avatar.
Vishnu is portrayed as having a dark complexion – the color of passive and formless ether, and with four hands.
Sankha, Chakra, Gada, Padma:
On one of the backhands he holds the milky white conch shell or ‘sankha’ that spreads the primordial sound of Om, and on the other a discuss or ‘chakra’ - a reminder of the cycle of time - which is also a lethal weapon that he uses against blasphemy. It is the famous Sudarshana Chakra that is seen whirling on his index finger. The other hands hold a lotus or ‘padma’, which stands for a glorious existence, and a mace or ‘gada’ that indicates punishment for indiscipline.
