Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun and the second largest planet in the solar system. Saturn was the Roman name for Cronus, the lord of the Titans in Greek mythology. Saturn is the root of the English word "Saturday."

Saturn is the farthest planet from Earth visible to the naked human eye, but it is through a telescope that the planet's most outstanding features can be seen: Saturn's rings. Although the other gas giants in the solar system — Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune — also have rings.

It is big enough to hold more than 760 Earths, and is more massive than any other planet except Jupiter, roughly 95 times Earth's mass. However, it has the lowest density of all the planets, and is the only one less dense than water

Saturn, is the ruler of Capricorn. In Greek Mythology, Cronus was one of the Titans, and the father of Zeus. Cronus ate his children to prevent himself from being dethroned as the King of the Gods. That is, until his wife, Rhea, tricked him into swallowing a stone when Zeus was born.

It is associated with restriction and limitation. Where Jupiter expands, Saturn constricts. It brings structure and meaning to our world. It knows the limits of time and matter. It reminds us of our boundaries, our responsibilities, and our commitments. It brings definition to our lives. It makes us aware of the need for self-control and of boundaries and our limits.

In Astrology, It is considered as the sigificator for longevity. By being away from the Satvic atmosphere of the Sun, Saturn has less of culture. Its epithet Manda signifies its low level of culture and status. In the field of prediction, whenever we notice that a house has Saturn as its lord, and neither the house or its lord have on them any benefic influence, we may conclude that the result represented by the house involved is relatively low in status.

It takes approximately 2 to 2-1/2 years to transit one sign, and approximately 27-28 years to travel through all twelve signs. It is in its exaltation in the sign of Libra; Saturn is in its fall in the sign of Aries (opposite the sign of its exaltation); and Saturn is in its detriment in the sign of Cancer (opposite the ruling sign of Capricorn). Saturn represent hardships and labour in the native's career, influences the houses of wealth or their lords.




It doesn't make things easy. That's the role of the taskmaster of the zodiac. It commands us to get to work and to work hard. Discipline and responsibility are important to this planet, yet if we're eager to conquer the world. Saturn is a planet of philosophy and possesses much viragya, i.e., detachment. If Saturn and Rahu influence, by association or by aspect, the first and the fourth houses of the horoscope, on their lords and the Moon—the significator of mind — then the man possesses much vairagya.

Saturn behaves as a female planet though masculine by origin. For example, if in a Libra ascendant, Saturn is placed in Cancer in the 10th house, the person will have several daughters. If Saturn is placed with the Sun in the natal chart, the native must guard against heart ailments.

Lord Shani - In Hindus Dharma

In Sanskrit he is called Shani or Shanaishchara (the slow mover), because he takes about two and a half years or so to pass through each constellation of the sidereal zodiac.

In the Linga Purana it is said that Shani was born from the solar deity Rudra. The Markandeya Purana states that Shani is the son of the Sun god by his wife Chaya (shadow).

Saturn is cold and dry, tamasik (lethargic) and an elderly planet. His sight is bad, and he is said to be "malefic amongst the malefics." It destroys the house it occupies (except if positioned in the seventh house, where it receives directional strength) and any houses it aspects or any planet it conjoins or aspects.

When well placed it gives its natives integrity, wisdom, spirituality, fame, patience, ability to lead, authority, long life, organizational abilities, sincerity, honesty, love of justice and awareness of right and wrong.
