Vomiting and its Ayurvedic Remedies
Home Care Tips and Diet Advice
Vomiting, medically known as emesis, is a forceful expulsion of stomach contents through the mouth. It is not a disease in itself but a symptom that can arise due to various physical or digestive disturbances in the body. It may be preceded by nausea – a feeling of uneasiness in the stomach urging the body to throw up. While sudden vomiting can be uncomfortable and disturbing, Ayurveda offers safe and natural remedies to balance the aggravated doshas that cause this condition.
Several factors can contribute to vomiting. These include food poisoning, indigestion, overeating, motion sickness, pregnancy (morning sickness), migraine, stress, stomach infection, alcohol, intolerance to certain foods, acidity, and exposure to stale or contaminated food. Vomiting may also be associated with fever, headache, dizziness and abdominal discomfort.
According to Ayurveda, vomiting (Chardi) occurs due to aggravation of Kapha, Pitta or Vata dosha, leading to the reverse movement of stomach contents. The treatment focuses on restoring digestive fire (Agni), balancing doshas and eliminating toxins (ama) from the body.
Ayurvedic Remedies:
Ginger (Adrak): Fresh ginger juice mixed with honey is a powerful anti-emetic that soothes the stomach and prevents vomiting.
Mint (Pudina): Mint tea or mint juice calms the digestive tract and provides instant relief from nausea.
Coriander Seeds (Dhaniya): Soak coriander seeds in water overnight and drink the water to ease vomiting.
Fennel Seeds (Saunf): Chewing fennel seeds or drinking fennel tea helps reduce nausea and improves digestion.
Cardamom (Elaichi): Sucking on cardamom seeds or sipping cardamom-infused warm water settles nausea naturally.
Amla (Indian Gooseberry): Rich in Vitamin C, amla juice detoxifies and reduces acidity-related vomiting.
Cumin (Jeera) & Honey: Mix roasted cumin powder with honey and consume to stop vomiting.
Diet & Lifestyle Tips:
Drink plenty of warm water and avoid oily, spicy, heavy and fried foods. Opt for light meals like rice gruel, khichdi, moong dal soup and fresh fruits. Keep yourself hydrated with coconut water, buttermilk and ORS. Rest in a calm environment and practice slow breathing to reduce nausea.
