Ayurvedic Remedies for Hematemesis – Natural Treatment for Vomiting of Blood

Hematemesis, or vomiting of blood, is a serious condition that requires immediate attention. In Ayurveda, it is referred to as a condition arising due to Pitta dosha imbalance, particularly when aggravated Pitta affects the rakta dhatu (blood tissue) and the amasaya (stomach). Ayurveda approaches this condition by identifying the root cause and treating it through herbs, diet, and lifestyle management.

What is Hematemesis?

Hematemesis is the vomiting of fresh or digested blood, often appearing as red or coffee-ground colored vomit. It may be caused by internal bleeding in the stomach or esophagus. Common symptoms include nausea, weakness, abdominal pain, and dizziness. While allopathic medicine focuses on stopping the bleeding, Ayurveda emphasizes dosha balancing and tissue healing.

Causes of Hematemesis in Ayurveda

According to Ayurveda, hematemesis is usually due to an aggravated Pitta dosha, which overheats and irritates the internal tissues. This leads to ulceration, bleeding, and disruption of the digestive tract. Common causes include:

Excessive intake of spicy, sour, or fried foods
Alcohol or smoking
Emotional stress and anger
Overexertion and physical strain
Pre-existing ulcers or liver disorders

Ayurvedic View: Role of Doshas

In hematemesis, Pitta dosha is the primary cause, though Vata may also contribute by creating upward movement and dryness, aiding the ejection of blood. Ayurveda treats the root imbalance by cooling and nourishing the tissues and strengthening digestion.
