The Janaki Navami fast is observed on the ninth day of the bright half of Vaisakh, as she is supposed to have sprung on this day from a furrow, while King Janak was ploughing the field. Sita means a furrow. Janak took her up and brought her up as his own child. She is also called ´┐ŻA- Yonija? not born from the womb. She was actually Sri or Goddess Lakshmi in human form, incarnated in the world for bringing about the ideals of the India woman. As an embodiment of self- sacrifice, purity, tenderness, fidelity, conjugal affection and other conceivable female virtues, Sita is par excellence.

Some people believe that Sita ji appeared in the field of Janak on the eighth day of the black half of Phalguna, and so they celebrate Janaki Navami on that day. However, observance of fast and offering of prayers and worship to mother Janaki o this auspicious day bestow upon the aspirant, conjugal happiness, marital bliss and wordly prosperity.
