Red Coral Gemstone, also called Lal Moonga and is orangish red or sindoori
(vermilion) in color. It is not a stone but skeletal remains
of marine animals called Coral Polyps. These live in colonies, which form branching structures as they grow, eventually resulting
in coral reefs and Atolls. It is also called Bhomaratna, Angarak mani, Sinduja etc. In Persian it is called Miranga,
Majaan.
It is found in Japan, Mediterranean and African coasts. Black and golden coral is found in West Indies and Australia.
Coral has hardness of 3;
specific gravity 2.68;
Refractive index 1.49- 1.66 and Trigonal crystal structure.
The chemical formula is Ca C03 ( or c3H48N90ll).
