Advantages of Ayurveda

•It is preventive, protective, health promotive and curative in nature. At the same time herbal remedies are self-contained, and nutritive rendering them harmless and non-toxic.

This provides a constructive approach against destructive forces.

• Ayurveda is not man-made but is believed to be a divine gift. It is for us to study, seek search and take the benefits from this treasure of knowledge.

• Ayurveda is mainly based on herbs, plants, flowers, fruits, vegetables and all vegetation that grows around us in plenty. It is our native system based on the peculiar Indian conditions. Further whatever is available in our own country is bound to be more suitable in creating good health to us rather than borrowed knowledge as well as materials. Charaka samhita stresses the same point.

• Ayurveda begins when everything fails and when the treatment is uncertain and prolonged, ayurvedic approach is the right choice since it cures chronic and stubborn diseases by its deep-rooted treatment procedures and drugs.

Tibetan Medical System

The fundamental concepts of Tibetan medical system, like ayurveda, revolves around the five cosmo physical energies and three humoral energies. The working concepts of Ayurveda like pancha bhutas, tri-doshas, sapta-dhatus, mala traya etc. also constitute the main features of Tibetan medicine.

Pulse diagnosis and urine analysis also form the distinctive feature of Tibetan system. The most unique feature of Tibetan medicine is its integrated buddhist approach to mind and body. Ignorance and three in-born mental poisons such as attachment, anger and delusions are the main cause of all sufferings, it believes.

The history of Tibetan medical system dates back some 3,800 years to the time of the non-buddhist culture of Tibet's native religion "DON". It has continued to evolve since then to the time of the strong emergence of buddhist culture in India.

The Tibetans made use of their country's abundant natural resources of flora and fauna to fight against diseases. The 7th and 8th century A.D saw real development in the field of Tibetan medicine. Ayurveda has contributed a great deal in enriching the system.

The Gyud-shi or the four great classics which are most authoritative texts of Tibetan medicine bear ample proof of its loyal alleigance to ayurvedic classics like Charaka, Sushruta Samhitas and Astanga Hrudaya.

The Unani System

The Unani System, is based on the humoral theory which supposes the presence of four humors in our body.

1. Blood

2. Phlegm

3. Yellow Bile and

4. Black Bil

e People's temperaments like sanguine, phlegmatic, choleric and melancholic coincide with the preponderance of these humors respectively.

Blood is hot and moist, phlegm is cold and moist, yellow bile is hot and dry and black bile is cold and dry. The basic principles of Unani system .are similar with niai or' ayurveda. Unani system believes that every person has a unique humoral constitution which represents his healthy state. Any change in it affects his health.

There is a power of self-preservation or adjustment called the defence mechanism which strives to restore disturbances within the limits prescribed by the constitution of an individual.

The Unani system is the result of the fusion of diverse thoughts and experiences of nations with an ancient cultural heritage, like Egypt, Iraq, Iran, India, Arabia and China. Unani originated in the 5th and 4lh centuries BC under the patronage of Hippocrates in Greece.
